The inbuilt Microsoft provided defrag program is not very good. I suggest you change to Diskeeper: http://www.diskeeper.com/landing/landing.asp?RId=1046&ad=dk10google&APID=PPS0001292&gclid=CNrox-3MoYkCFRMWVgod-A7ZRA

How full is the drive? The defrag in windows has to have at least 20% of the drive open in order to do a defrag. Clean out any programs or files that you don't need or use and then try again.

if your hard drive is full right up the defrag program will not run, i think you need at least 5% free for it to be able to run

you have too many programs running. you will have to streamline what applications are going in order to run defrag effectively. if you have too many things going at once, the defrag will just keep restarting and never happen.

Depends on what program you use to defrag.

I use Norton SysWorks, and in order to defrag my C drive (well, the one with windows on it), I have to remove the paging file.

This is set under control panel / system / advanced / performance / settings / advanced/
