I have a hamster, and a rabbit, the hamster has shredded paper and soft wood shavings, the rabbit has hay and news paper, the paper on the bottom of the hutch as it keeps in warmth, and hay and shredded paper on the top. It eats the hay and makes nests in the shredded paper, it`s also good as it recycling!!!

Each animal is different rabbits need lots of attention and are very costly such as neutring, injections ect. Gerbils and hamsters are for people that do not really want a hard pet to look after but i think u shouldnt get an animal at all.

The rodents and rabbits go on aspen or carefresh like others said.
But if they shelter has ferrets then they would love to have some nice hammocks and fleece bedding. Also, yesterday's news or woodstove pellets for litter.

not really... Hamsters can use a Aspen or Carefresh bedding... they like Aspen better... not Ceder or Pine... which can result in upper resp. infection because of the chemicals they put in while processing it. Rabbits and Ferrets can be on something called Yesterday's News... which you can also use with a cat as well. its a paper formula type of pellets...Although on the bag of Yesterday's News they do say you can use it with Hamsters... i dont recommend it... and Aspen you can use with Rabbits... and i really dont recommend that either because Rabbits are more likely to get an upper resp. Infections easier!

I have two hamsters, 2 gerbils and a rabbit and I use the same bedding. Wood shavings may be less expensive but they are not good to use (Pine and Cedar) because their are chemicals in both shavings that cause lung diseases among the furries! I used a pulp paper litter. the brand Kaytee makes great bedding and my pets adore it because it is soft and easy to burrow in.

Do not get pine or cedar bedding, as those can cause respiratory problems in the small animals.
Try some aspen bedding, or non-colored Carefresh. Also, you can buy some toys for the dogs/cats, and chew toys for the small animals.
Maybe even donate a few cages?

Don't use soft wood shavings like cedar or pine. It's hamful. The best os wood stove pellets. http://www.rabbit.org Rabbits can always use some rugs to destroy, phone books, straw broom heads, dired apple branches, food, money, timothy hay, and wooden parrot toys.

Wood chips are bad for ferrets. They like burrowing, the best thing for them is a blanket, old clothes are good too, like a t shirt or something.

I don't know much about hamsters and rabbits, but I own ferrets.
Do not use wood chips for ferrets. Paper is the best bedding for ferrets. You can get this from the pet store, however, I have found that the best bedding to use is plain old news paper.
Ferrets also need litter. Again, paper is a good choice, however there are some cat litters that work well too. Do not get any type of clumpable litter. The cheaper stuff is usually the best. Just make sure it says "dust free".
The other things that would be a good donation item for ferrets are:
Ferretone
1. Ferret-Vite
2. Ferret-Lax
3. Bedding.....hammocks, sleepsacks, blankets (go to a fabric store and get scraps of fleece, or old towels and sheets)
4. Ferret Food-8 in 1 is good ferret food and I have known Humane Societys to feed ferrets cat foods that are not so good for them
5. Ferret shampoo and deoderizers (again 8 in 1)
6. Toy, toys and more toys....they like squeeky toys, rattle toys, tunnels, balls, etc.
The best donation I could say is offer to help with medical issues. Alot of ferrets that are turned over are ones with medical needs. This can be very expensive. If you can't do this, then offer your time to transport the ferrets to a ferret shelter. There they will get the individual care that they need, that and if they are going to be in a shelter, they are better at a shelter that specializes in their needs then at the Humane Society where they have multiple types of animals that they have to care for. Not all Humane Society's know about ferret needs and those needs get left uncared for.
I do want to say, your a great person for thinking about these animals. I wish more people like you would help these babies out.

My local SPCA prefers to use pressed pellets; newspaper or aspen (they prefer the aspen for the cats litter boxes). so i too would recomend a pressed newspaper pellet (or wood pellet) such as yesterdays news.. There is another variety sometimes available much cheaper with a horse on the package(i don't remembr the brand name anymore sorry). They also use alott of Aspen woodchips, so aspen Chips are also a good idea.
In the winter our local SPCA likes blankets and pillows (old is fine) for the dogs to sleep on, litter for cats, Food for any of the animals is always appreciated. treats for any of the animals are nice. If your humane society has a webpage i'm sure they have a list of what they currently need most; maybe look there.
