i have been recommended a lawyer in miami, but i am concerned about how good they are before i start dealing with him, is there anywhere i can check them out before hiring them.

I simply can't resist this one. Here's how you test to see how good a lawyer is and it works anywhere; you can of course modify the test in many ways, I'll list two or three;
1) In a room full of lawyers, throw out a $100.00 bill and the first one to come up with it is the best!
2) Take five lawyers to the bus station and point out someone in the crowd and tell them that's the person with $100.00 bill in their wallet. The first lawyer pick pocket the victim and return with the money is the best.
