There are a number of reasons.
1. They really want to know the answer.
2. They're bored.
3. They have nothing better to do than try to get people all riled up. (see #2)
4. They want to see who else knows the answer. Kind of like a quiz.
5. They want affirmation that what they believe is true for others too.

Its the way of gaining knowledge in our life, and it starts at the first chance one can talk. Toddlers ask , whats that? All the time! That is only the beginning. Also, it can just be to inquire, because one cares about another person, so they ask questions, or are nosey.
