What substance looks most like blood on film? I've thought that blackberry juice might work, but I haven't tried it. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Stage blood is cheap -- we bought some at our nearby Halloween Warehouse (link in the Sources field). You can probably find it local to you but I know the Halloween Warehouse will mail-order it.

It's pretty realistic looking on stage -- enough so that when the character would turn to face the audience with a "bloody nose," there were always gasps and stunned reactions from the audience. One little kid even asked his mom, audibly in our small theater, "Is that real blood?"

The actor who ended up with the fake bloody nose, though, did comment on the flavor of the fake blood: "It tastes like chocolate and agony."
