You have a mild form of Phimosis (the foreskin being tight and hard to retract. First, before even thinking of circumcision, do not force to pull it back. You may not be able to pull it forward and can cause "strangulation" of the tip of your penis (glans) and this is painful. You are right. You need to be circumcised. See a urologist. It can be done at his clinic. Its quick and local anesthesia is all thats needed. What he will do is either slit the skin at the middle or remove the entire skin covering the "head". The latter is aesthetically better since you are already an adult. (Your partner would love it) Dont get embarrased. Your doctor wont mind, really. Tell him directly what your problem is . No fuss.

Let me comment a monent on the answer Chase gave about "had to get circumcised because of phimosis". I wish you had seen another medical professional, because there is hardly ever a case where a person "has" to get circumcised, and more often than not phimosis is misdiagnosed. Any case, back to your question. There is nothing "normal" about being circumcised. It is a deliberate procedure that amputates an important part of the male (in your case at least) body. It is not widely practiced and the incidence of it is reducing even further as people learn the truth of the natural penis. What you need to know about circumcision is that is it a terrible mutilation of the human body. No civilised person could ever allow this to happen to someone they claim to love. Circumcision is the removal of the (male) foreskin. Uncut or uncircumcised refer to the natural state of the penis where the whole of the sexual organs are intact. About 90% of the males on Earth are not circumcised, but it is still practiced as a routine in Israel and in the USA. Circumcision of a boy if as painful as circumcision of a girl - that means cutting of the clitoris and labia of a girl! I cannot imagine why anyone would want to inflict significant injury and permanent damage on a child or any other human. It is as good to be circumcised as it is to cut off your eyelid so your eye no longer has the protection and lubrication it was designed to have. A male was born with a foreskin for a reason, and it was not so it could be cut off! Circumcised penises are no cleaner than a natural one - any one who says so obviously has no idea what they are talking about. It is said "World Health Organization and the Center [American spelling] of Disease Control want all males circumcised", but that is not true. The benefits of a foreskin far outweigh the benefits of circumcision. Only a fool would want to inflict such terrible carnage on another human. WHO and CDC do support circumcision, but only because American doctors and pharmaceutical companies make huge dollars out of the cruel process. They are willing to sacrifice human health and wellbeing on the altar of monetary greed. Circumcision of the male is just as barbaric and cruel as circumcision of the female. Most people would not even consider inflicting such damage on a girl, yet some still consider it an acceptable practice to perform on a boy.

I think you should consider seriously before getting circumcised. There is an argument out there that circumcision is an archaic practice synonymous to Chinese foot binding. I tend to agree. The foreskin actually does have a function.
If you are in your preteens, give it some time. For most men, the foreskin will retract when the penis becomes erect.
Why be embarrassed? Whose to know your penis. Perhaps someone special and that person is likely to appreciate it.
As far as hygiene, glands in the head produce extracts that protect the penis. Of course, you would want to wash occasionally to prevent odors. You would want to wash immediately or soon as permitted after sex, circumcised or not!

You don't need a circumcision. You can either try stretching exercises, or see a urologist for a consult. The most they would need to do in this case is make a small incision on the side of the foreskin to give you more room to retract.
Removing the foreskin completely removes thousands of nerve endings; the foreskin is mucous membrane - very sensitive and sexually stimulating. Without it, you will get less sexual stimulation. (Men who were circumcised at birth have never experienced it, so don't miss it, but men who are circumcised as adults all notice a reduction in stimulation).
Stretching: Place two fingers inside the foreskin, one either side, and pull out as far as possible comfortably. Don't hurt yourself! Hold the stretch for 20 seconds. Repeat at least 10 times, twice a day, for a month. The foreskin will slowly get wider and will allow freer movement. Do the exercises more often or longer for better results.

Your doctor can tell you where you should call to arrange the procedure. I'd advice you to get circumcised asap to avoid further problems.
Now some info on circumcision. Keep reading...
CIRCUMCISION IS VERY BENEFICIAL, its cleaner and several research bodies have concluded that circumcised men have less risk of contracting STD's such as AIDS-HIV or herpes.
Uncircumcised penises are difficult to keep clean, and more prone to infections and penile cancer, studies have shown.
A circumcised penis is naturally clean and virtually free from urinary infection. You will not have to worry again with careful washing of your penis.
Is it NOT true that the AAP (American Academy of Paediatrics) does not recommend circumcision. They simply say they leave the decision to parents. But recently, and specially after the New Zealand study, the AAP has been discussing if it may be necessary to change their policy and recommend circumcision to all newborns as they used to do, so in the future we may see that the AAP advocates again circumcision.
Have a look at: http://www.baby-health.net/articles/381.html
About STD's:
As I said, several studies carried out by prestigious research bodies have concluded that uncircumcised penises are more prone to infections and contraction of STD's, including AIDS-HIV. Circumcised men have been proved to be up to seven times less likely to be infected than those who are uncircumcised. Have a look at this site: http://icuxbridge.icnetwork.co.uk/news/tm_objectid=14095142&method=full&siteid=53340&headline=-circumcision-protects-against-aids--name_page.html
As for women, studies also show that circumcision also protects female partners from AIDS-HIV and other STD's. Browse this article: http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/Press_releases/2006/02_08_06.html
About sensitivity of a circumcised penis:
No medical or physiological study has proved that circumcision reduces sensitivity, opposed to common belief. It is completely FALSE that circumcision reduces penis sensitivity. The American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) confirms this on their web site; have a look at: http://www.aap.org/pubed/zzzjzmemh4c.htm
Circumcision is an easy and nowadays *painless* procedure, which has many benefits, and virtually no risks.
Circumcision is NOT an amputation. Circumcision is NOT comparable at all to female circumcision, which is something completely different.
Circumcision rates are INCREASING nowadays, both in the United States and overseas. Many African and South American countries with little circumcision tradition are starting to promote the procedure to help to reduce the AIDS-HIV infection rates.
Finally, this site has a lot of useful and *unbiased* information. Make sure you have a good look: http://www.circinfo.net

I was circumcized when I was 13 for two reasons. One: I thought that I was the only person not circumcized and was embaressed. Two: It's just too hard to take care of. It did hurt me to pull back the skin and to clean it and I had enough. I had the procedure done and the doctor did very well. There were stitches that hurt after, and I had to pee out of this tube. After about 6 months, you should be fine. The first weeks hurt like hell, you should ask for pain meds. After those 2 weeks, all the stitches should be out by then. After a year, I noticed there was like 2 stitches still in my skin but it was so small I never noticed it. I just took them out with my hand and since then I've been happy with the results. I suggest doing the procedure.

Just talk to your doc honestly, believe me they have seen worse. My 13 year old son decided he wanted to be circumcised last summer. His primary doc referred him to a general surgeon and it was done on an out patient deal. And believe it or not he said the pain was not that bad. He said it hurt when he had to pee but that was all. Good luck!

Maybe, you don't need a circumcision, but only a simple cut to correct the Phymosis you have!
Please let the urologist to decide about, after a specific visit o just go in a hospital.
