I love Rand's "Anthem", "Fahrenheit 781" (I know it's a movie), "Norwegian Wood", Anne Rice's "The Vampire Lestat" and everything by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Please suggest a great book (under 400 pages) that's is not a film and is not being made into a movie. Thanks.

You sure you don't mean Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury? It is the temperature at which paper bursts into flame.

It is very hard to know what has NOT been made into a film, because it may have been done on a low budget in some other country, and I would never hear of it.

One I would dearly love to see done, but which I understand has been attempted more than once, is Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein. I often choose it when someone asks my favorite novel. It is the story of Valentine Michael Smith, a human who was raised by martians and returned to earth as an adult. He had some very radical ideas about Life and Love, and founded a . . . oh, but I'm ruining it for you if you have not read it.

>How would you feel if you were told your novel was >being made into a movie? Very happy. >But they wanted to change a few minor (or major) plot details. >Would you be okay with that? Sure. This sort of thing happens all the time. >BQ1: Have you ever finished a novel, and if so, >did you try to get it published? Yes to both. >BQ2: Who's the best character you've ever created? >Describe them. Sorry, you have to wait until the book is published. >BQ3: If you were told that paper books were >getting discontinued, and you were only able >to read them on things like the Kindle, >how would you feel? Sad. As Alan Dean Foster once wrote, "...there is something about having those favorite parts of a book at your beck and call, rather than having to plead for them through an electronic middle-man." Kindle can't compare to that. Also, old books smell like cinnamon. >BQ4: Who would play your protagonist/antagonist >in the movie adaptation? The hero would probaly be played by Matt Damon or Nathan Fillion. >BQ5: Do you prefer to write in first, second >or third person? What about read? In the past I have written in first person, but that is actually more difficult. These days I prefer to write in third person. Reading in first person is fun, but very few writers can do that successfully. Roger Zelazny is a notable exception.

For stand alone novels, I'd go with:
Doomsday Book by Connie Willis
The Walking Drum by Louis L'Amour
The Outlaw of Torn by Edgar Rice Burroughs
The Fencing Master by Arturo Perez-Reverte
The Cabinet of Curiosities by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child
Riptide by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child

For series (I know, you asked for under 400pgs, but these are great):
The Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelanzy
The Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey
Saga of Pliocene Exile & Galactic Milieu Series by julian May

Try Reading The Five People You meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom, amazing book and i was thinking of the same thing. I have a long list of books i want to read, but i had to put it on halt because of my exams. Eragon being one of them. And when i discovered it was being made into a film i felt irritated, i hadn't even read the book yet and it was being made into a movie! I mean people should wait at least 5 years before they decide they want to make a book into a feature film.

The Gospel According To Larry and Vote For Larry. Both great books. The last book in the trilogy will be coming out soon. I'm not sure what it's called.

King Fortis the Brave. But then again, after watching Eragon and seeing how they ruined the story, I hope that King Fortis is never made into a movie.

"THE TURNER DIARIES" by Andrew MacDonald

"FIRE OF THE COVENANT" by Gerald N. Lund

"ONE IN THINE HAND" by Gerald N. Lund

"RIDE THE LAUGHING WIND" by Brent and Blaine Yorgason

That novel inspired me to compose a song, "RIDE THE LAUGHING WIND."

"THROUGH THE SMALL DOOR" by Zanne Serig

I'm guessing that all of those books can be located using any Internet search engine.

To my knowledge, not one of them has been made into a motion picture.
