I am not sure which car you are referring to. The only major all-electric car being marketed right now is the Tesla Roadster which is an expensive showcase to prove to the world that electric cars can match acceleration, speed and mileage of a gasoline car. Looks like its years before the technology is ready for mass market. Some manufacturers are looking into PHEVs or Plug-in Electric Hybrid Vehicles which retain some fossil fuel element to their energy but will be mostly electric and do the equivalent of 100 mpg.

This one is not so hard if you keep the car lightweight. In addition, if you can go 3 wheels, you will come in under the motorcycle law and save lots of money. If you can do some of the work yourself, it will be fairly inexpensive.

A 10 horse electric motor, and about 200 pounds of batteries will be the basis of your drive train.
