Here is the site for Amtrak, you have to put in your departing city and destination city and pick a station, it looks like you may have to change trains twice between San Francisco and Los Angeles.

There are two different trains. I have attempted to take the "Coast Star-late" before and gave up when it didn't show after 12 hours of waiting at Union Station. Nothing but horror stories about that train.

There is another train-bus-train combo you can do...you take a train from LA to Bakersfield, a bus from Bakersfield to Fresno, and a train from Fresno to Martinez...I think. Double check the cities it stops in. There's no view, but it's a little cheaper and faster and it doesn't come with the sh!tty reputation.

$68 Give or take a couple of dollars.
You will probably have a bus connection.
Normally two trains.
For 159$ you can travel around the state seven times in 3 weeks.

you can do it on amtrak but i've heard nothing but horror stories of people making that particular trip. delays for hours, etc. i would recommend against it. flying is just as cheap if not cheaper and only takes an hour and a half.

Amtrak, but it goes through Oakland.
They have specials call them or go to their web site.

"Coast Starlight" (just Gizoogle or search Yahoo for that phrase).

Not sure of the cost, but amtrak.com has the answer.
