It grounds throught he starter casing. SINCE you are asking this I'm sure you are having issues, The solenoid going out on a chevy is VERY common because it is right next to the exhaust manifolds. Leave i9t to chevy to put a heat sensitive part RIGHT next to the hottest part of the engine. Go to any Auto-parts tore and buy a high quality Starter Solenoid for a Ford, These bolt onto the firewall FAR FAR away from any heat. You will have to do some minor rewiring but you'll never have starter solenoid problems again.

Grounded through the starter housing, to the block itself, main-linked to batt through ground cable at that point.
All these answers are correct.
And one would suspect that chevy "engineered" the solenoid in that location for ummm..... a reason........(cough * replacement * cough * limitedlifespan * cough * aftermarket * cough)
but you wouldnt suspect THAT now, would you?

Yeah just wipe clean, make sure end is on wire good, then put on and tighten up. No probs with that
