Length is how you describe a one dimensional object, such as a line, and doesn't apply to a two dimensional object such as a square, just as you couldn't measure the depth on a two dimensional object, or the duration of a three dimensional object.

A square has 4 equal sides but, a rectangle has length and width. In that case, the length is the longest side and the width is the shortest side. It doesn't matter which way a rectangle appears on paper-you will have the same length and width.
