LOL...this would be nice...but....the shock to the system for today's kids would likely kill them....same effect as giving a fat kid a carrot for supper. I don't watch TV any more because it's garbage...it's everything that wrong.

Here's the problem - shows such as Father Knows Best, Happy Days and so many others were not realistic. They were enjoyable, but nobody did those things and no housewive dressed like June Cleaver on Leave It To Beaver. Today's programs are much more realistic - except for the reality shows which aren't - which gives them a certain edge. And, they're a product of the times in which we live - a more violent and sexually-oriented time. The others were from a simpler time when sex wasn't something you openly talked about and kids respected their parents more than they do today. Care to think what programs will be like in 20 years? One solution is TV Land which carries many of the older programs. And remember, if you don't like what's on, you can always read a book!

I actually got a phone call asking me a similar question- it was from an organization called "Families First" or something.
Her spiel was about how tv damages children, so to protect them, we should regulate ALL tv- including cable.
I'll tell you what i told her:
There is plenty of alternative family planning available on and off television. In fact, there are now edited "G" versions of many mainstream films available for rent that have any borderline content removed.
However, most parents allow their children to watch television unsupervised.
Perhaps if they spent more time being better parents, rather than spending it blaming their children's decline in values and morals on someone else, they wouldn't be having to ask these questions.
Change the channel if you don't like it, turn it off if you feel offended.
Just Don't blame others for your own inaction.

Actually that isn't the situation I see in today's television programming. Most of the violence is suggested, and is not always shown. And the sex? Other than pay-for-porn Playboy channel, where do we see full nudity and adults doing what adults do best?
Once you get past the 'filthy' and 'clean' labels, you will come to the educational vs mindless entertainment. Why not ask, wouldn't you like to see the opposite of what we have today? 29 educational channels and 3 entertainment channels, instead of the other way around?

I agree with you totally. What ever happened to Leave it to Beaver and The Andy Griffith Show? I know you can still catch re-runs of Andy but back in the day all you had were those types that your kids could watch too.
Apperantly there are few of us that feel this way because as far as I know whats on tv is supposed to be what the majority wants. Kind of like supply and demand.
Where are peoples morals these days???

There are plenty of options for everyone in today's day and age. If you don't like something, you change it. TV is an escape from our daily lives' routines. If you don't like "filth", don't watch it and don't encourage your kids to.
I like the violence and I like the sex. When are people in this country stop trying to censor everything. Life is full of different people with different tastes, live with it.

I totally agree! The best thing to do is turn the tv off and read, but most people won't do that. Daytime tv is the worst....just talk shows, freak-o-ramas, and shows about people suing each-other. We really are going backwards socially...back to cavemen where the main object of life was to hunt, survive, and procreate. I wonder when we'll finally restore some sense of social dignity.

I totally agree. I think people's views of what's entertaining have become totally skewed. Violence and sex and drugs are so rampant on nearly every channel its ridiculous. People wonder what is wrong with the world today and its because this stuff has become acceptable. I long for the days of Leave it to Beaver and Andy Griffith and nice simple clever entertaining shows. If I want to see sex and violence (which I dont) one needs to look outside the window. I dont need to be paying for it on cable! About the only "safe" channels are PBS and Nickelodeon. I hate to think what would happen if the current public mindset alters that too.

Yes, last night's options: Victoria Secret Underpants Parade, or CSI: Carelessly Shooting Individuals. And to think I grew up with Happy Days and Who's the Boss.
