Hey Briocom,

Early Civilizations needed water. They realized it was easier to be there, than to try to transport the water. They had no real techniques to drill for water. So, the put up camp next to the river, and the civilizations built up there.

Through the centuries the rains and melting snow carried leaf litter from the fallen leaves and top soil from the hills ,and deposited it in the valleys. As the hillsides became less and less fertile, the valleys built up soil nutrients. Growing crops was far easier in the valleys.
Another reason is comfort. The hills catch the wind while the valleys are more protected.
Still another reason is the river, a great supply of water.

They need water in order to survive. Living in river valleys allowed them fresh water to drink and cook with and water for their animals and crops so that they could eat.

Because a river valley had fertile soil for growing crops, as well as a plentiful water suppy. no pipes and supermarkets back then.

Errr Nile Valley Indus Valley the two Euphrates or Tigris Valley (Ur became on the Euphrates i think of) and that i think of that's the Yangtze yet verify that one. the two that or the Yellow River. Sorry have not been an spectacular help haha.
