. This can be a confusing topic. The problem is that each company that makes baby food uses a different label for each 'stage' of food. Since these stages aren't standardized, the American Academy of Pediatrics, in their Guide to Your Child's Nutrition, advises that 'two rules apply across the board: Begin with stage 1 foods for beginners, and don't offer your child toddler foods, which often contain chunks, until he is an experienced eater.'

RE:
At what age do you start stage 2 baby food?
How many months should your baby be before you start stage 2 baby food? Aidan is almost 6 months old and has been eating stage 1 since he was 4 months. Just not sure when to start him on stage 2. I know it has a thicker consistency than Stage 1.

I think he is ready for stage 2. My son started eating stage 1 at 3 months and I started giving him stage 2 just after 3 weeks of taking stage 1. It is not much of a difference, but make sure you try one kind of food at a time and let at least 3 days pass by before trying a new kind to make sure he's not allergic to certain types of food.

It does have a thicker consistency but is not that much different from stage one. Stage two does have the chucks of food in it to help a baby learn to chew their food. I would start on stage two when the stage one no longer fills him up. If you feel he is ready now I would go ahead and do so. My sons pediatrician told me to just skip the stage 1 foods because there is no difference in the stage 1 and stage 2 foods, just a big jar for your money.

Stage 2 didn't see all that different to me, just more food and food blends. My doc and the lable said it's fine at 6 months, especially if he is used to eating from a spoon. You should still make sure that he has had one of the foods in the blends, so if there is an allergic reasion, you will know what coused it.

In my experience there is absolutely no difference in consistency between stage one and stage two. Theres just more in the stage two. I think the consistency change comes in stage three. If he's finishing the whole jar of stage one and acting a little hungry still, then switch to stage two.

He's probably ready since he's been on solids for two months now. I didn't find Stage 2 food to be that much thicker, actually. Both of my kids transitioned to it very easily.
