It means the the cobbler is so busy and so tired of working on shoes all day, that when he gets home at night he does not feel like working on his own family's shoes. So they have the worst shoes...

He has time for everyone elses shoes, but not his own. Because he is bored of doing other peoples shoes, it is the last thing he wants to do when he comes home. It's a little bit like,"it's a busmans holiday".

As already said, a craftsman is so sick and tired of plying his trade day in and day out that when his own household has need of his skills he procrastinates endlessly...my dad was an electrician and it was almost impossible to get him to do electrical around the house...we boys did it and had to drag him in to inspect it before energizing the circuits...LOL

It means that if a person does something for a living they don't like to do that same thing at home. So a baker's family probably buys bread, teacher's kids might need to pay for tutoring, a carpenter doesn't want to renovate his own house, etc.

An example:- my brother in law is a cabinet maker, but not one thing in his house is made by him. And that can be attributed to any skill that is are done for other folk, but nothing at home.
