People were 'affected' by the eruption, because the eruption had an 'effect' on them... illiterate.

Must have been some bloody sh*it Grammar schools Zarathustra The Illiterate went to. At my Grammar School, if I had punctuated and spelled, and shoved-in incorrect apostrophes in plurals the way he does in his answer, I probably wouldn't be alive now

Obviously Pompeii and the other towns in the region were the first and worst affected. That is where most of the fatalities occured. However like every major eruption of a volcano it affects the world's weather for a couple of years. So in reality every living person on earth was affected, many will have died because they couldn't get enough food.

any poor romans who were within 30miles got a severe case of heat stroke, partical inhalation and singed toes...apart from those roasted or deep fried by the lava or pyroclastic flow.

Also id consider the fall out (litteraly... the ash falling to earth) and the effect on the regions agriculture. also think about the relative small size of the Med. sea and the effects on tides/tidal waves that a bif shockwave creates...high tides en sunk fishing/trading boats.

Finaly look at economic fall out... the damage to early imperial funds to reapair the damage, lost revenue from destroyed estates and the shock of being so helpless in the face of nature.

To put it in a mod perpective.... what would happen if a volcano erupted 10 miles from washington dc, and i meen a BIG eruption, how would folks cope? the Romans were the superpower of their day and the most advanced society since the greeks.

Look at a map in your textbook... draw three circle's (IN PENCIL) around the volcano scaled to go out 20 miles apart and make some notes on what happens in each layer:

1. inner layer around and including the volcano.
2. 2nd layer out to 40miles
3. 3rd layer out to 60 miles.
4. evrything outside the last circle (trust me kid...when a volcano go's bang like Ves. did... the effects go right around the world! )

Finaly look out for a little town close by and do a search on its name..you might be surprised at the amount of sites u find.

Good luck!

To the chap above who seems to have missed his true calling:

My speeling may suck, my puntuation may be impermissible in polite society (mostly due to grammar/spellchecker reliance in early life) and my use of 's may perhaps break the odd rule of grammatical decorum... but at least im not averse to sharing wisdom rather then your approach of "look at me..am i not great?". In short, i scoff at thee "scoff scoff scoff".

Now kindly go back to your old school, stop slagging off your 75 year olde maiter and return to your true calling of a boarding hall's rent boy.... honour thy father en mother you godless savage
