i am thinking of getting a ps2 for xmas can they play any region discs for films and do they play dvdr ect

The PS2 is region specific for movies and games.

The PS2 can play your own burned DVDs but not divx/xvid/mpeg etc, this is model specific...

There are hacks available to unlock the PS2 on certain models.
