I'm looking for something that will give me a heightened feeling of mental happiness. I've tried Ginseng and St. John's Wart, but they are bogus. Anything that's maybe not so mainstream but that really works?

To: Quite New Here...I didn't ask for your judgemental attitude or your "holier than thou" response. I'm looking for info, not your self-rightous opinions.

St. John's Wart can help with depression but that doesn't mean it will make you feel happy, simply that it will help you feel less unhappy (there's a difference).

I don't know of any (legal) "happy" herbs or supplements. If you are suffering from depression, talk to your doctor and get on a medication that will help you deal with that...once the depression is under control, you will be able to make yourself happy (which is the only way any of us can truly be happy anyway).

Good luck!

Why should you want a "heightened feeling of mental happiness"? For me, that is not a natural nor a adaptive way to deal with the world.
Even in the animal kingdom, you do not see an example of a giddy hippie.lol
This feeling is artificial and maybe even escaping from reality.
As for herbs to do this, probably the hallucinogens will do it, but by and large, those are illegal, and whats more, very very temporary..
Ginseng is used to feel invigorated , healthy and strong. It doesnt promise happiness. St Johns wort treats depression. Supposedly, it keeps you at an even keel.

I gavr you the rest of this before I realized you were looking for metal health type stuff.
Here's another interesting link
http://www.pjclinic.com/herbalinfo_mh.htm#5htp
It talks about something called 5HTP so check it out.
There are many herbal supplements and natural extracts that are beneficial to ones health.
I have recently been researching this in relation to cancer treatment and have found several articles on the noted benefits of:
Mushroom extracts bolster the immune system
Green Tea extracts increase T-cells
Melatonin extracts help with sleeping problems
and so on. . .
Always check with your doctor in you are on other meds to see if there might be a conflict.
Herbal remedies are every bit as powerful as regular pharmaceuticals so be careful.
Here is a link to some of the articles I found.

The search phrase I looked under was cancer treatment support therapy.Obviously you don't have cancer but it leads you to all the same info basicaly

Mary Jane? It's illegal, but it works.
