you can go to "www.pcpitstop.com" and test your system for free and if desired anonymously. Once tests are done scroll down to highlighted words "test details" This page will show all details and if you scroll down you can view the running programs.
If you get rid of some of the unnecessary programs it will improve your processor response and therefore should get rid of the lag.

kb/s isn't really a measure of speed it's more of a measure of capacity (how much data you can move in a period of time). Speed is how long it takes the data to get there. When you ping you are measuring speed.

When you have high ping time it means that it is taking a long time for your data to make it to the server and back. If you are using a satellite connection for the internet they have high lag times because of the time it takes to travel to the satellite and back to earth.

You could try pinging Yahoo, Google and other web sites to see how long those take. If all the sites you ping have a high lag time then your connection is slow(keep in mind speed and capacity are different). You could cycle power on your modem assuming that you have cable or DSL to see if that helps any. If your lag time stays high for the next few days for all the sites you try and ping it may be time to try and find a new ISP.

If you get good ping times with the game server and your game still seems slow then it could be that you need to increase the capacity of your connection (higher kb/s) or your computer could be slow.

Dude u seriously have to rethink about ur concept of "GOOD SPEED"as far as online gaming is concerned a T1(1000kbps) or above can b cosidered an ok connection i still woudn't call it good.
Good is lan speed( 10/100 MBPS). It's alot of data for such a narrow bandwidth.
u can improve abit by turning down extra visual effects and joining a server with minimal players..
face it we r not upto speed yet. Kneel down and Pray may b we all can enjoy such speeds...

If you have more than one computer in the house and one of them is doing something bandwidth intense such as P2P or watching streaming video then that will cause poor online game performance. If your downstream is fast (web pages appear instantly) then it's possible that you don't have very good upstream bandwidth. DSL carriers are notorious for being cheap with the upstream speed.

you will desire to be completely wonderful. i've got have been given a three Mbps plan and in TF2, i'm getting like one thousand ping whilst some servers immediately kick you for over 250. enjoying a activity is like watching a slideshow.

Find a server with a low ping, that's the best I can tell you. If your connection is only 160Kbps, that's only 20KBps...that's a little slow, especially if you have other programs running that are using your connection (Peer-2-Peer file transferring programs, etc.).
