that's like grand theft auto, the godfather (the game of course), and mercenaries where it's relativley open-ended with missions and side missions while still being able to just roam around, as well as being a shooter. Anybody know of any like this?

Just Cause. This game puts you in a huge map and is a free-roam style game. Its a lot of fun when you get the chance to hi-jack a helicopter straight off the ground and jump out once you get to the top of the game. Its a good shooter when it comes to the story-line and side-missions, a little shorter than expected, but fun none-the-less. It is a multi-platform game, so whether you have the xbox or xbox 360 your in for the same game.
