I always believed it was divorce papers because at the end of the movie he returns the package to the woman and he stands in between the roads and decides what he is going to do next. I never found out but I believe that he might of endid up being with that woman.

According to an interview Director Robert Zemeckis once gave, he jokingly said it was a;
Waterproof-solar powered-GPS-Satellite phone..

Really the package was "hope" it was the thing that gave "Chuck" a sense of normalcy and purpose...he would complete his duties and deliver his package.....

p.s did you notice that his name is Chuck Noland

In my opinion, you are never suppose to find out what is in the box. The box is a symbol of hope and is also a life line to Tom Hanks. He makes it his goal to get off that island so that he can deliver that package. He gave him a reason to live and to strive and to survive.

would have been a hoot if it was a dingy lol, but i agree with it being hope and determination. that package really shows that when all else seems to be gone we still have to find a sense of purpose and keep going.

Hopefully, a script for a better movie. The best actor was the ball. The movie was ruined when left Tom Hanks. I would have done the same thing. I am very serious.
