because Bush is FOS!! He even said the week before that Rummy needed to stay through his entire 2nd term. Such a schmuck.

I see two possibilities here:
1) Rumsfeld could better serve Bush's ends by working in the private sector, i.e. with the Carlyle Group.
2) By "finest" Bush meant that we was the most attractive Secretary of Defense ever.

Bush didn't fire him. He was forced out of office because of the incoming democrats. Bush would have kept him on if the republicans would have won the election.
