I'm thinking of pursuing a career in journalism- can anyone give me some pros and cons of the profession?

I started in 1979 as a news director in a radio station. Eventually I went over to the music and advertising side of it. Nowadays I work freelance from home because the industry has changed a lot. I watch the city council meetings on cable access TV, then use the audio and my own voice to write the stories, which I email to the local CNN affiliate as MP3 files.

Newspapers, TV and radio stations outsource more and more of their news. They try to spend as little money as possible on staff, and as a result they end up using canned material provided to them by news services but also directly from industry and government. So this makes the job market really tight, because a company that used to have 10 reporters on staff might only have 2 now.

Communications Majors are coming out looking for work but they haven't learned anything and they're useless. My advice is to go to a good college and major in something that really interests you, while studying journalism on the side. If you can, work on the campus newspaper or radio station to gain experience, or offer to work free in town in exchange for training.

And good luck! it's a lot of hard work but very rewarding!

It's a great field to be in. Mainly because it's so broad and the training you receive for a journalism degree is so broad and intense that you are ready for anything (you learn about PR, Advertising, Videography, Radio, print, etc.).
