My car cuts off as I am driving. The check oil light comes on, after about 3-5 minutes it starts right up as if no problem and the check oil light is not on. I recently started to hear engine knock. Is my 1993 Pontiac Bonneville dying?

If the oil level is ok I would say either the oil pump is going out, not building enough pressure hence the light. Of if you have blue smoke out the exhaust your rings are going. Either way I would say your car is pretty sick. Try running a heavier oil like a 10-40, there is also 15-50 but General Motors engines usually don't fair well with oil that thick.

Start saving for either repairs or another car.

Find out what make the check engine light come on. Take it to a garage and validate the error codes. Isolate the problem, low oil pressure, etc. Then address the problem, it may be a very simple easy fix problem.

Cutting out, oil light flickering of the oil light (or steady on) and the beginnings of engine knock all point the same direction. It's time for a major engine rebuild if you plan to keep it. Probably needing new crank bearings...have your mechanic take a look.

i own a shop, and it sounds like it may have been run low on oil before ,to produce the knock in it,,the oil pressure switch will shut off the engine of it thinks the car is to low on oil,,it was designed to do that id have it checked out real good, and see what a local mechanic says about it,,advice is free, and good,,but the wrong advice ,can wind up costing you a Lot of money,,good luck ,hope this help,s.,,have a good x-mas.

Your vehicle probably has what is called " green wire syndrome", this means some of your wire connections are corroded. This is a common problem and hard to find whitch connectors are to blame. The check oil light will come on when your vehicle stalls and go out when you restart the car.. Hope this helps

Couple of things come to mind here:

When was the last tune up done?

When was the last oil change? Or when was the oil last checked?

Question 2: How is the maintenance frequencies kept up? Your timing belt may be loose/worn out.

Check the oil pressure with a mechanical guage! These symptoms sound like low oil pressure!

Did you check the oil ?
If needed did you add oil ?
If you did neither I know exactly whats wrong!
There has to be a loose nut behind the steering wheel.

Sounds like an electrical problem, possibly in the ignition. You should get it fixed right away. It sounds dangerous.
