NO..I think we should still celebrate Christmas..but I agree with you completly..
No one cares about the meaning anymore. It has become an excuse to spend money, and the whole concept of having to spend just to impress others makes me ill..
I think everyone needs to stop and get educated on what the Holliday really stands for..

Done away with? Why, because of your stereotypical belief that people in general only care about celebrating the Christmas season in a materialistic way?
In a word - no. There are many, many people who understand that the true meaning of Christmas has nothing to do with materialism, and they celebrate it as such. Even for people who buy into (pardon the pun) the materialism of Christmas, who's not to say that Christmas doesn't also have a deeper, more spiritual meaning for them?
I love the whole consumer-related idea around Christmas. I love the shopping, looking for that special gift for loved ones and friends, giving to charity, putting up decorations, etc. I even love the crowded malls. It's just the whole spirit of the season that is special. It's a time when I reflect on being thankful for the gift God gave us in sending His son. I know a lot of people have similiar feelings.

IF you do away with CHRISTmas, then you do away with any real socialogy of Christ. Whether or not you think it's to materialistic or not, most families (mine included) remember what it is about, and the myths of Santa Claus and other things associated with Christmas have to do with legends of cultures. I.e, Santa Claus came from the Danish, who sometime ago in a village there was a toy maker who would go about his villiage late at night and drop toys off in children's dutch shoes (stockings). They looked forward to recieving toys once a year. (this was a legend my great-grandmother told me whose mother was from Sweden). It is up to each parent/adult to instill the true meaning of the holiday. My family reads the story of Luke 14; which, is the story of Christ's birth each Chrostmas morning and then we sing Happy Birthday to Jesus. This way the kids know who they recieving gifts for. We also do the whole Santa thing for them as well, but when the kids ask who has more "magic" Santa or Jesus (kids ask silly questions) we ALWAYS tell them Jesus and God have more power. This satisfy's them and they know that Santa is just a bonus, not a must.
Do I think we should do away with Christmas? No, I am 28 and still can't sleep the week before nor the night of, no matter how tired I am, how burnt out I am with shopping and cleaning and baking... It is important that the excitment is there, without it the TRUE MEANING might be lost.

Could you legally do away with Christmas? Make it against the law to celebrate it? How could that be enforced? How about if all employers refused to give their employees December 25th off? (Be careful of what you ask for, you might just get it!)
You have the freedom in this country to celebrate (or not) the holiday in the matter you feel is most appropriate. Here's a suggestion: if you believe Christmas is too materialisti, give the money you would normally spend on gifts to family and friends and donate it to charity instead.

I agree with you. It is all about revenue for the country. People spend more money during Christmas then any other time of the year. And why wait until a certain day to buy some one a gift? Plus the real meaning of it isn't even real. It is a made up holiday so that the christian religions could celebrate the festivals in Bible times. Jesus was not even born on Dec. 25th.

You know what your question was icky but i understand what you mean. I mean do you think anyone in the east celebrates the holiday like us? I mean the REAL reason for Cmas is that Jesus was born, and yeah how did us westerns change it into Cmas trees and lights and things? Don't get me wrong, I love that stuff! But I think the real reason is lost in the sauce. But yeah I try not to be distracted by it! =P

I think the gift giving should be done away with. I don't give gifts at Christmas. I gift give all year. Either on a birthday, or a secret gift or just because I thought of you when I saw this. To me, being with family and friends is more important than anything. Just sharing the love and thanking God for us being together.

No, of course not. Observance of a holiday may change and eventually fade away, but that is the collective choice of the society. It isn't for any person or government to decide that by force.

Businesses depend on it and I'm sure many Churches do too because that's when most people attend services.
However, many celebrate other winter holidays, and non-Christian probably don't care one way or the other. There is a long history of Christian opposing Christmas celebrations because they originated from Pagan celebrations.
