On this planet, we all need to take responsibility for our own actions. Sadly, however, we live in a world where people don't need to think for themselves...as the media is happy to do it for us. Programs like Fox News, for example, spew republican propaganda instead of news...and any young minds watching it will not know the difference. Therefore, their minds are formed in that propaganda.
Music is an extension of that. As we are no longer encouraged to think for ourselves, we seek our opinions and beliefs from all sources around us...including music. Rap music can be horribly negative in many ways, and therefore, minds can be influenced negatively.
Should rap music be held responsible? I think the artists should take responsibility and recognize the influence.

I haven't heard this scapegoating since Bill O'reilly, and the media's attack of gangsta rap in the 90's. Being a fan of hip-hop music I can say rap music now a days has really penetrated mainstream culture. Because of this exposure to the rest of America and its obvious influence on young teens from every nationality, rap music is an easy target for blame.
I think what has more of an influence on America's social ills are some of the programs that show people's irresponsible decisions, like judge Joe brown, Jerry springer, cops, etc..
These are the programs that although may reflect people's lives and situations propagate, reinforce and make irresponsible behavior entertaining, acceptable, and part of the status quo. I think Bill Cosby makes a good argument (for those of you who know what I'm talking about)
email me if you want a debate.

Big time corporations spend billions of dollars on advertising their product.Know why?
Because they know a person's mind can be influenced by what they hear and see.
The industry of Rap/Hip hop has permeated the media.Rap is used to sell everything from hamburgers to cars.So why not a lifestyle?
I mean you take a saying like"Get rich or die trying!"Put a beat and some lyrics behind it and some youngster is going to pick up on that concept never realizing that he probably will die before he gets rich but as Bob Dylan once said"When you got nothing ,you got nothing to loose."
Now,after saying all that I must say I don't know why people blame rap for people's inability to make responsible decisions.

my thought would be, a lot of (the "bad" or in otherwords most controversial) rap music actually has a meaning to it, but it talks over many peoples heads including some teens and adults, while at the same time providing a good beat and good rhymes which physiologically speaking, or in other words in the brain, increases levels of dopamine which is the feel good chemical...now think about something, when people feel good they want to repeat the experience, so that leads to addictiveness in listening to rap music while at the same time its inducing thoughts and ideas (even if they're not completely grapsed by the listener) into the listeners head.
so christians and such in particular especially dont like it, and in such take note of its listeners (in some peoples cases their teens) habitual behavior in listening to it and repeating the wording around the household.
now i dont mind listening to "controversial" rap music myself (the kind talking about players and platinum chains and machine guns rat-a-tat-tattin a block down...but at the same time im smart enough at the age of 18 to understand its not really in my best interest to play it out in real life (no matter how i feel after work some days). instead i go to college and am pursuing a degree in biology.
a lot of the news headlines and such that are anti rap come from bible belt christians and the like i highly suspect, or at least originally, and now its just a nationwide popular topic in debates and such.

They probably mean to blame peer influence, but if people aren't making responsible decisions, there are many more factors that contribute to poor choices, lack of experience being one of them. Our youth has justifiable cause to be rebellious just as the children of the 60's had cause. Many consider adult voters to be responsible citizens and look at who's in office!
I'd say voters are responsible for SCREWING UP.It's easier to blame the misunderstood or another then to take responsibility for our own actions.

That is terrible that people think that.
I remember growing up i use to listen to punk music, and my mom thought thats why i was doing drug. WHAT AN IDIOT, i was depressed because of all the abuse i had at home. Im not blameing abuse for using drugs, BUT I AM SAYING that music mad me happy....made all my problems go away for a while,
I dont see how music can make someone harm someone.

Because some people are not natural leaders, but followers. They search for acceptance or validation through their behavior, which is often shaped by society around them, including rap or other music. It is true people should be strong enough or mentally capable of separating reality from entertainment, but some fail to do so for various reasons.

Well it is garbage. The problem is young kids hear this crap and they don't have the sense that God gave a pee ant and it influences. The kid has the parent in their ear saying one thing and the world saying another. Well that is the way it is in my case. Seems how I am a parent that cares and tries to do the right thing, but unfortunately I have to send my kids to public schools where they are influenced in a negative way by music and friends everyday. It's just what the world is turning into- all the things you hear in rap songs!

Because people can be ignorant. People said the same thing about rock music back in the day.. its a vicious cycle. Just wait until all the older generations are gone. We will probably say the same things about our kids music.

Because the rappers never tell you how to get out of the projects or the crib, but how to continue to get the drug money to get the things og this world to propetuate the poverty mentality. They also continue to treat women like a "B' and call them "ho's". Rappers get caught with drugs and guns. They always wear bling, bling. They have a gutter mouth in really bad rap. I would stick with christian rap.
