I have a little boy who is almost 8 months old. He sleeps wonderfully in his crib all night from about 8pm-7am. He will usually take a morning nap in his crib, but after lunch he takes a long (2-3hours) nap in his swing. He is appx 21lbs and his swing only goes to 25lbs. I am trying to decide how and when to transition that long nap to his crib. I tried before this, several times, to put him in his crib for that nap, but he wakes 45 minutes into it and will NOT go back to sleep. He will get so worked up that he can't go back to sleep, even though he is cranky and needs to. Anyone have any experience with this? Any good tips or advice? He is a VERY stubborn little boy and does not like to take naps anyway. He fights sleep during the day, no matter how tired he may be. Thanks for any advice... please don't post criticism about him sleeping in the swing; we are all moms and do the best we can for our children. Thanks again!

You might try playing music for him in his room, set it to repeat all, and see where that gets you. Chances are good, though, that he's relying on the motion to help him stay asleep. If he's an active sleeper, sometimes the rocking helps children rest more completely.

On the other hand, our swing made a repetitive clicking/humming sound which was soothing, too. My guys have aquariums in their rooms. They make nice bubbling sounds, and they seem to sleep well with the white noise. It was fairly easy to transition sleeping baby to crib with the continuity of that noise.

It might be a bumpy transition for your guy, but the good news is that it won't last very long, as long as you're consistent. If he knows he doesn't have the option to return to the swing, he'll pitch a fit for a day or so, then he'll forget about it and get some rest.

It's the funny thing about small people: if they get tired enough, they will go to sleep...eventually.

Good luck--

Well I'm not going to say anything about sleeping in a swing, BTDT. Hmmm let's see sleeping in a swing now and then or dangerous drugs to treat reflux.... hmmm yeah there is a hard choice. (That is my life, not you.)

Maybe if you get one of those light show thingies that go in the crib that he can trigger that would help.

If not, your best bet may be (and I know it is really expensive)

Sounds like he is relying on that rocking motion to keep himself in the deeper sleep. Maybe it's the rythmic sound of the swing...

Try playing rythmic music beside his crib while he's sleeping. It sounds like he's on a really good routine for sleep... good job!!

Unfortunely, you might be dealing with a rocky transition... I'd keep him in the swing as long as you can... them deal with it!!
