I barelly know anything about metal, but I'm trying to change that since I'm geting fond of it.

When I got into metal 9 years ago I didn't know anything about it either, but I had a co-worker who did.
I started with Dream Theater and Fates Warning. Both are really great bands. I don't generally like labelling a band as this or that but for the sake of clarity...
Goth: Lullacry, HIM, Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, Epica, Leaves' Eyes
Thrash: Kreator, Sepultura (with Max)
Death: Opeth, Carcass (RIP), Coroner (RIP)
Doom: Theatre of Tragedy, Candlemass
Progressive: Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Cairo
Power: Helloween, HammerFall, Stratovarius
The bands listed above are my personal favorites, but are just barely scratching the surface if you consider how many bands are out there. Each of the above bands do have official websites where you can download song samples. The (RIP) next to a band name means the band has disbanded and have no official site. Although you can find fansites that will have sound clips.

all the 80s bands are great there are too many to count but you can find a CD with a large selection of bands like Skid Row Motley Crue Ratt Judist Priest Guns and Roses YandT Ozzy Cinderella Poison Whitesnake then if you like those then go for a little more up to date metal. Sorry really dont have a lot of band names for them I am still living in the 80s Bon Jovi ROCKS

I'm a fan of the glam metal days...bands like Motley Crue and WASP ruled!!
But, I'd also recommend bands like Anthrax, Motorhead, Biohazard and Pantera. These are some of my personal favorites. It'll give you a good starting place.

I love Nine Inch Nails, Rob Zombie, Slipknot, AC/DC, Def Leppard, Deep Purple, White Snake, Twisted Sister, Cinderella, Ozzy(after Black Sabbath!), Van Halen, The Who, and Linkin Park. You won't be disappointed. Rock on, sister! Welcome to the better side of music!!!!!!!!!!!!!
P.S., most of these bands are from the 80's, when rock was at its best.
