What kind of polygon? For this puzzle, the polygon must have a definite number of sides, otherwise there are numerous solutions.

The points of a polygon could all be lying in the same plane, in which case it would be a 2D ploygon. All triangles would by definition have their points lying in the same plane, and thus be a 2D object. It would not necessarily have to be lying flat along the X,Y, or Z axis. A four point polygon such as a square or a trapezoid could be skewed so one point is not in the same plane as the other three. However, in 3D rendering this could affect the visibility of the surface since this would affect the flatness of the object. What would happen is that the surface normal would be thrown out of kilter and phong shading would not work. In most if not all 3D work you would want all individual polygons to be flat, 2D objects.
