There was no Adam, there was no Eve, it's a cute tale, but come on, already. If God created everything, he used an evolutionary process. There is LOTS of evidence for evolution, none for the Adam and Eve schtick.

The animals evolved over a period of millions of years, as did man.

When man developed language, they began to talk about the animals, which ones to run away from, which ones were tasty, which ones were yucky, which ones went well with a side of fava beans and asparagus spears braised and served in a bearnaise sauce, and so on.

Pigs and chickens taste better than cats and penguins, for example. Roaches are really yucky. There isn't a lot of meat on a gnat.

You may have noticed that animals have different names in different languages. This means that lots of people named them, and the names changed when the language changed, gradually, as words always tend to do.

As Brainstorm suggests, all living things, including people, evolved from simpler organisms, and ultimately from inorganic matter, although the time involved was considerably longer than 600 million years.

As for who named them, probably no single person gave any animal it's common name, although the scientific, Latin, name of an animal is usually coined by the person who is credited with discovering it.

And remember, most animals do not have "a" single name, but multiple names, depending on the language being used. Thus the animal known as a "dog" in English is known as a "perro" in Spanish, a "hund" in German, or a "chien" in French. As for who might have first used the word "dog" to name the animal we all know so well, that is lost in the mists of history.

Along this line, I once had a discussion with a woman I work with who was considering writing a children's book about the "funny" names that some animals have and how "Adam" might have come up with them. The example she used was "hippopotamus," which she thought was a partucularly strange name. She was somewhat taken aback when I pointed out to her that that name actually comes from the Greek for "river horse" (hippos = horse; potomos = river). Of course this name considerably postdates the time of Adam, even if you accept that myth as an historical event, and even if you accept the "young Earth" hypothesis of an Earth only six thousand years old.

Genesis 1 tells us that GOD created all things on the earth. Adam named the animals also in Genesis 1. Adam was created from the dust of the Earth and Eve was created from Adam's rib. Genesis is a wonderful Book to read during the holidays. It is full of great stories for the old and young alike! Have a great Christmas!

Here's the story of Adam and Eve. Okay, God made the earth in 7 days that's where we get our weeks from. On the last day which is the 7th he rested and then he saw that his work was great so he created Adam. He gave Adam permission to have any fruit in the garden except 1 fruit. He saw that Adam was lonley he created Eve out of Adams rib. Then a serpent came(the devil). The serpent told Eve that if ate the forbidden fruit she would be just like God. Anyway God gave permission to Adam to name all of the animals. The animals were made from dirt.

Scientists of course, give all living creatures their scientific name.

During the creation, God spent the fourth day creating the birds and fishes. He spent the fifth on creating the other creatures, and on the sixth day He created man in His own likeness. He placed them upon the surface of the Earth.

He placed Adam in the Garden of Eden. There, he named all the beasts that God created. Whatever name he gave to that creature, it became that creature's name.

Good heavens! Three out of four answers seem to accept that the creation myth told in the Bible is true - and they don't seem to realise that Genesis includes two, mutually contradictory, myths anyway.
