I am thinking specifically of press reports of 1) huge salaries of CEOs of charities and 2) huge chunk of contributions going someplace other than to those the charity is supposedly dedicated to. Is it possible to "give wisely", and pick only the "better charities" when most that happens, happens out of the public eye?

I am very careful with the charities that I give money to exactly because of what you are saying. I don't like the red cross ceo getting too much money and I don't give to the united way any more for that reason too. I figure that my money is all that I have control over so I give it to charities that I know are going to use the money for work and not lavish lifestyles.

YES, even the salvation army is pushing an agenda, maybe I'll just go down to the mission and hand out 10 dollar bills for wine

I always check out the operating cost breakdown of the "non-profit" organization" before I give any $ to them. Some have higher"operating costs" than others.
