I am a Woman... But not a girly-girl so...
"The Portrait of the artist as a young man and Uylsses." are my favorite books. Both are by James Joyce.
But when I was a young girl (as opposed to the old lady I am now.) My favorite authors were Judy Blume and Katherine Patterson.
"Jacob have I loved" (Patterson) was my all time favorite book as a girl!

For girls? So you are talking young people's literature? The entire Harry Potter series is my first choice, but too many people will mention that. How about the works of Louisa May Alcott, Frances Hodgson Burnett, and L M Montgomery?
Alcott's most famous was Little Women, of course, but she also wrote Little Men, Jo's Boys, and several other good books for young women.
Frances Hodgson Burnett wrote The Little Princess, The Lost Prince, The Secret Garden, Little Lord Fauntleroy, and other works of Victoriana for girls and boys.
L M Montgomery's most famous work is Anne of Green Gables, which was followed by quite a few sequels, but she also wrote a good many other stories of a similar style in the early part of the 20th century.
With the exception of J K Rowling, no one seems to write good fiction for young people anymore. It's all Politically Correct crap.

Huge fan of Jean Auel's Earthchild Series--there are now 5 books and one or 2 more on the way.
Female Heroine, astonishing detail, intricate world-building. Cannot say enough good things.
Second favorite is anything by Anne McCaffrey, but especially her Crystal Singer Trilogy (I wish I were a Crystal Singer!).

My favorite book is "The Book and the Brotherhood" by Iris Murdoch. Ms. Murdoch's books are so intricate, so peopled that you fall into the fabric of the world she creates, and find yourself walking around in a fog in the alien planet outside her books when you complete one. She has written 26 novels, and other non-fiction books and essays. Every time I finish one of her books I feel a deep melancholy for new friends lost. Women are inclined to do the same sorts of things men do in her books - not confined to traditional "women" roles is what I mean.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares is an amazing series for tween and teen girls. There's also a movie.
It's realistic fiction, and basically four teenage girls share a "magic" pair of jeans over their first summer apart.
