If your house is clean, and doesn't have much dust, your should be fine for a very short time.
If you have pets, I'd try to clean the filter enough to get you buy, or all the fur from the pet will go into the furnace, and that wouldnt be good.

It should be o.k. for a bit. The filters help keep the heat exchanger clean and that is important for efficiency and for how often you need to pay for a heat exchanger cleaning - so don't just blow off filters forever.
The filters also clean the air in the house which cuts down on dust on your furniture and dust in the air you breathe.
Just get them when you can.

Pick up the correct size, there not that much and will save you headachs down the road.
