#1. What exactly is the purpose of these "unlocked" cell phones that I have been reading about? I mean, are they a type of pre-paid of someting? The reason I ask is because my current service provider which is Cricket, offers the Razor phone that I'd like to have, but at an incredibly expensive price. I found on under $200 on a web site of unlocked cell phones. I noticed that it said something about a SIM card, which I don't have, & don't have the slightest idea about how to get one & keep my current phone # & service. I've been told about Cricket Flash services, but in this situation, would an unlocked phone be capable of flashing?
#2. I have a Nokia Shorty model 2115i, I have had over a year without any service. I set it so that the lock code would be required upon powering on, unfortunately, it HAS been a year & I don't remember it. Virgin Mobile said I'd have to buy another phone, but I know there is some Cellular Expert out there that can help. The default isn't working either!

#1 Unlocked phones are phones that can be used on other carriers but you are still limited to the capabilities of that phone, namely the digital technology it uses and the frequencies it can operate on. This most often applies to GSM phones, but can also be on less commonly CDMA phones from the carriers that actually lock theirs. Cricket is a CDMA provider so GSM phones, unlocked or not, will not work on Cricket. That's why you don't have a SIM card, because CDMA does not use SIM cards. If you get a CDMA Razr, you could flash it with Cricket's software to turn it into a Cricket phone, provided Cricket will activate a foreign phone. I've read in Howard Forums that they will. I'd look on eBay for a Cricket Razr and save myself the trouble, but if you want to go the other route you can. In summary, find a CDMA Razr V3c, flash it with Cricket firmware and PRL, then take it to Cricket for an ESN change. Voila!
#2 You could flash the phone and that'd reset your lock code. This would require a data cable and software. It's possible that there are other programs that use the data cable that could extract your code/unlock your phone for you. Maybe this will work. Try: *#7370#
Also, I think I've been able to unlock (PIN code lock) some Nokia phones through the *3001#12345# menu somewhere. If this is a Virgin Mobile or Sprint PCS phone it will probably require the MSL to get in. If so, then you're out of luck.
PS - a lot of the answerers below me are referencing things which only apply to GSM phones. Neither of your phones are GSM. Your phone does NOT have a PUK or PUK2 code. Being the time of day it is, you're getting a lot of answers from Europe where they only use GSM. Unfortunately, they never picked a single digital standard in the US and that makes mobile phones there that much more difficult to understand completely.

An unlocked cellphone is a phone that has the capability to be used on any US GSM network, or any foreign GSM network via a Foreign GSM SiM card. Fo r example you ahve Cricket, but with an ulocked cell phone you can use that phone on cingular, T-mobile, celluer one etc.
2. If the default isn't working your best bet is to contact Nokia. They may be able to provide you with a reset code, or reset it over the air. Chances are you may have to purchase a new phone.

#1. The locked phones refer to phones that are purchased with some sort of susbcription to a certain provider. U can't use that phone with another provider unless you go to a specialist to "unlock" it. If u have a susbcription to Cricket for example u must have a sim in your current phone. If u change your phone just insert the simcard in the new one and you will keep your current provider, number, etc. Check that the phone you buy is compatible with the current SIM card ( it is not locked)
#2 The lock code is the PIN number if I understand correctly. Your provider can unlock your SIM if it's the PIN number. If it is the phone lock code and u have forgotten it then there is only one way to fix it: Go to a mobile phone service unit and reinstall the software.

The Cricket Network and Cricket phones are CDMA technology, the Razr phones that you see listed as “unlocked” are GSM phones and work with GSM technology. GSM phones will not work with Cricket service. With GSM phones, once unlocked, you can put in any GSM providers sim card and the phone will work. You being with Cricket, that’s not the case. If you want a new phone, your best bet is to look on bay for a “Cricket Branded” Razr. If you change your provider in the future and want more flexibility with your phone choice. Look for a provider that works on GSM
Cheers

Yupp, you should only need the PUK code. I hope you saved the papers that came with the mobile phone, it should be somewhere in there.
I can't believe they told you to buy a new phone! Incredible. Are you sure that you haven't changed it from the industry setting of 12345?

on #2 it's true: that 'code' thing and also when it's 'locked' from bad programming, think it's 3x, if it's under a 90 day warranty from any store, they should replace it with a receipt, under 1-year without a receipt, Virgin Mobile will. I love those guys!
