you know...i was just pondering this yesterday. i was thinking about neanderthals and did they understand that sex=pregnancy.
i think that they understood procreation b/c even animals know what needs to be done to procreate.

No need to over think this one.
Physical procreation was well established in humankinds history long before the ability to make a cognitive connection ocurred.
Once cognant, males and females learned 8-9 months after intercourse that it resulted in off spring.
Trust that the females learned this fact far more quickly than did the males. The natural biological changes caused by impregnation triggered the males response to be polygamous.
Apparently some lower socio-economically positioned males STILL haven't figured out that intercourse leads to off spring.

In the year 3200 BC (aprox.), in Sumer.
At that time appears the earliest known goddess of fertility, love and sex, Inanna.
There are previous feminine deities but, as far as we know, dont connect sex with maternity.

Interesting question.
I believe there are or at least were some tribes who don't or didn't know.

Somewhere in our nature, we just know, and always did. Think of animals.......no one tells them, they don't hear it on tv or in sex-ed class at school.......yet they know what do to and why.
