I don't think it's a matter of which one is better or not. These are standards that some companies made for themselves. HP's computer standard is to record in DVD+R thus I can't play it on my DVD player attached to my TV which can only play DVD-R. Sony's is the other way around. Just make sure that your DVD player can play either one. DVD-RW or DVD+RW are played on more players out there.

well as you seen form the other answers there right most dvd players only read the dvd -rs this i found out form a firend of mine in the dvd producing industry he told me that most dvd players read the dvd-r how ever the dvd-rw you can use over and over agin they will also be able to hold the same amount of data or movies and stuff but unless you have a dvd player that can read the dvd + amd - r you might want to stick with the dvd-r they are perfect for most dvd players some times if you use the dvd +rs they can freeze up on you or just make you lose your mid trying to figure out why it isn't working i would also recomend the Philips Dvix certifed dvd play ive oned like three of them and i wouldn't go back any other one becouse they play just about any format you put in it

There are some technical differences, since they are competing standards. However, the average user of DVD is not concerned with the differences. Usually, the plus format (DVD+) results in a more reliable burning process, but the minus format (DVD-) is a more accepted standard. Either format can be used to write to a disc more than once (both DVD-RW and DVD+RW exist).

"As of 2006, the market for recordable DVD technology shows little sign of settling down in favor of either the plus or minus formats, which is mostly the result of the increasing numbers of dual-format devices that can record to both formats; it has become very difficult to find new devices that can only record to one of the formats."

So, you can just purchase a DVD burner that supports DVD±R(W).

in general terms it means if it can re-recorded on
i believe the minus one is only able to be used once, while the plus is able to be recorded on multiple times

some dvds can only use either one so it just depends on which one your dvd supports
