Is it not the same thing? A lack of self control. We do not baby alcoholics. We treat them like they have personal issues that they need to work on. Which is the way they should be treated. Now if you are so fat you can not walk from your car to the store then we let you park right in front of the store in the handicap spaces. Then we give you an electric cart to ride around in while you are in the store. We have to accommodate fat people or it is discrimination of some sort. We can not even call them fat because of political correctness. “They may have issues that they can not help”. They do have issues the same as alcoholics. Alcoholics can not keep liquor out of their mouth and fat people can not keep Twinkies out of theirs. Should we as a society not be tougher on fat people?

Yes, I think as a society we need to be tougher on fat people. A point that needs to be noted is that while an alcoholic may have liver damage after recovery, a previously obease person may have joint damage and still be physically disabled after they get within healthy weight range. Thing is, they really do have a physical disability. Alcooholics have an addiction, unelss they're on the sauce, most alcoholics blend right in, they can walk from one side of the lot to the other... a fat person with or without a cheeseburger in their hand still will have a hard time. I agree that society accomodates for them way too much. And that an addiction issue should be treated with respect and dignity if the person is trying to solve it. But in that sense, you can link alcoholism, anorexia, obesity, schizophrenia, turrets... why can't he just stop yelling and randomly swinging his arms? Because he has a disease. They all have a disease.
Rather then asking society to be tougher on fat people, I think everyone deserves a little empathy and should be given the chance to get better, to be educated about their disease and fix their problem.

Alcoholism and obesity are equally unhealthy. Often, both are caused by emotional or mental disorders. I think the main reason we treat alcoholics more harshly is that they often display rude and out of control behavior, whereas obese people typically behave like the average person. I see no reason to be tough on either, aside from laws prohibiting drunk driving and violence by drunk individuals. Why treat anyone mean? Focus on yourself and mind your own business. If a fat person wants to lose weight or not--it's none of your concern and has no direct effect on your life.

Of course I realize that we all pay higher taxes to support social security disability payments to disabled obese people, but I believe that no matter where our tax dollars go, the government will find a way to spend it.

I'm going to say what everyone else did because for many morbidly obese people, it's caused by a disease that they have no control over. Mentally, alcoholics and overweight people have the same problem. Most have emotional issues that cause them to over drink or overeat. I think everyone looks down on alcoholics more because of the drinking and driving and the recklessness that most people who are alcoholics do. You don't see many overweight people killing people on the highways but drunk drivers do.

You are SO about to get hated on by self righteous fat people. I know, I know- there are large people out there that are large due to disease, we get it. But there are TONS who are just fat! It is a lack of self control and it's also laziness on their part not to find a healthier way. Neither should be accomodated and I don't think we should tip-toe around someones obesity if it's due to their total lack of control and motivation. The same for alcoholism.

"Oh excuse me please! You go first, I insist, after all you are a drunk... its ok though..." "...after all you are fat..."

????

Why do we have to be so sensitive to those who are overweight but there is no sensitivity towards people who are a "normal/healthy" weight in conversation- if you're big, you must choose your words as not to upset them, but if you aren't big, well then, hell, say whatever you want!!!

...?

I actually prefer alcoholics as long as they aren't driving or doing something stupid, and truth of the matter is, most alcoholics do not do stupid things. I have little tolerance for obese people. Obese people are just plain disgusting. I wonder at what point they realize that they are fat??

As a fat alcoholic, I'm marginally offended. I feel that i should get those same spots in front of the bar, and the electric barstool so i can get my fat drunk *** around the bar to the bathroom.

whatever. I think people are more accepting of drinking too much than fat people. fat people get discriminated against all the time. It is the same type of thing, except that fat people don't necessarily become angry arseholes when they eat, or when they are deprived of food. They don't bother other people, only themselves. The military is very accepting of alcoholics.

I guess one of the reasons is that fat people don't drive and kill other people because their judgment is impaired.

I agree that people who are obese (not just fat) should not receive special privileges because they don't show self-control. There are ways to reduce obesity, even for those who have medical conditions. The majority of extremely overweight people in this country (US) do not have medical conditions.

You are sadly immature and ignorant. There are many reasons for obesity and alcoholism. There are biological reasons, personal reasons, nature reasons, and nurture reasons.
I suggest you read up on thyroid problems, pituitary problems and metabolism.
True, some fat people are fat due to their own laziness, but it is unfair to make the statement that you have.

They BOTH are things people should be "tough" on... I'm not saying people should make fun of them or anything... but those are the things they can help... alcoholism (just stop drinking) and obesity (just stop eating a lot).

The things they SHOULDN'T be tough on are people with HEIGHT problems like midgets or people with DISABILITY problems. THEY are the ones who can't help it.
