Is it not the same thing? A lack of self control. We do not baby alcoholics. We treat them like they have personal issues that they need to work on. Which is the way they should be treated. Now if you are so fat you can not walk from your car to the store then we let you park right in front of the store in the handicap spaces. Then we give you an electric cart to ride around in while you are in the store. We have to accommodate fat people or it is discrimination of some sort. We can not even call them fat because of political correctness. “They may have issues that they can not help”. They do have issues the same as alcoholics. Alcoholics can not keep liquor out of their mouth and fat people can not keep Twinkies out of theirs. Should we as a society not be tougher on fat people?

Yes, fat people do not kill people by driving drunk, but they do result in a financial drain on all of us through the medical cost to keep them alive. All our insurance payments are higher do to thier poor health. It also cost money to accomidate them in stores, airplanes, public buildings.

It is true what you say that they have similar issues, but the results are vastly different.

When a fat person puts a twinkie in their mouth, they may eventually become a medical burden, but the strongest physical, psychological and social ramifications still exist mainly on an individual basis. Fat people inconvience other people, but being an inconvience is entirely different than being a threat or a hazard.

Alchoholics are more likely to be abusive; physically, verbally, sexually. Alchoholics are more likely to cause traffic accidents involving multiple vehicles. Alchoholics are more likely to participate in anger or 'rage' activities because alchohol is a depressent but also an inhibitor releasor. There is very little evidence (except a famous court case, but that was basically ignored by the jury) that eating a twinkie made someone go ballistic, or that an extra double cheesburger made someone smash into a minivan on Christmas eve. You cannot say the same about alchohol.

Doing damage to oneself is human; to be recklessly ignorant of others, even to the point of becoming an extreme danger (which is what every inebriated person is behind the wheel, alchoholic or not) is criminal, and there is the difference.

Tougher on fat people? No, I don't think so. Their bn fat doesn't affect u, where a drunk can run u over with their car, bcome aggressive and cause all kinds of problems. Yes, both alcoholics n SOME obese ppl lack self control but neither one needs to b ridiculed. If u don't need an electric cart to get around, be grateful instead of judgmental.

Not always. Some people are always larger size for numerous reasons. It's happened throughout history. You can't be an alcoholic without choosing to go out and obtain alcohol. Some people can eat a very balanced diet and still be "fat." Look up Cushing's Syndrome for starters. Then there are other endocrine disorders that can cause obesity, but I don't have the space for that on here.

I don't like the answers so far. these people are trying to say that obesity doesn't kill as many as alcohol?...the #1 killer of men and women is heart disease, often times directly related to obesity. I like this question because I am an alcoholic and I gained 50 pounds this year. You are absolutely right. I do not deserve any special favors for either of these woes. I can change my eating or drinking at any time. It is solely my responsibility. My closest friends give me more sh1t about being fat than a drunk because they were used to seeing me drunk but not fat. However, someone who did not know me well would surely look at me with disdain if I fired down 4 shots of Jack, but not bat an eyelid to see me devour a steak and cheese sub. Our society needs some help, not fat drunks.

Once 17500 people (2001) get killed by people eating twinkies behind the wheel. Then we can talk about equal rights, because that's what drunk driving costs.
As for your pitiful excuse of medical costs, lets take into consideration rehab, kidney and liver failure. Loss hours of man power. You are truly grasping at straws. When have you ever heard of a fat person calling in sick to work because they have a twinkie hangover. As for traveling, many obese people are forced to buy 2 seats.

If I happen to go to a store drunk, I want the Handi cart. Just b/c a person is 400 lbs doesn't mean they get it. I am the one more in need at the moment.

It's all about perception! People percieve alcoholism as a disease that cannot be easily overcome and being fat as something that can be overcome by losing weight and surgery.

Fat people do not kill people when they are out driving around after a binge eating event....They do not have a tendency towards violence after eating...they do not call into work after a long night of evereating...

When I return home I'm going to run for the school board in my home town on the platform that we will begin teaching kids critical thinking skills. Every minute of every day there are questions like this one which prove again and again that our school systems are failing.
