In 1983, at age 16, I traveled by myself to the Republic of South Africa on a Rotary exchange. Except for learning about the abhorrent aparthied racial policies, I knew very little about the country. For 4 weeks I lived with several families, attended high schools with Afrikaans, English and African students, and discovered the unbelievable natural and cultural beauty of the nation and it's people.
I have been back to South Africa 3 times, cheered when the aparthied era came to an end and followed the struggles of a nation trying to recreate itself. Over 20 years later and I am still in touch with the friends I made on that trip.

The best journey of my life was 30 feet down when i accidentally fell 30 feet out of a crane and survived. I hit concrete floor. If i didn't survive, it would have been the worst journey of my life.
