Sears Kenmore brand seems to get a lot of top ratings from Consumer Reports, and in my experience, Sears has been very professional in installing and servicing their products. The August 2006 issue has an article rating kitchen appliances, and these articles appear at least annually. You can find back issues at most public libraries.

I have all Frigidaire appliances and have been very pleased with them. The only problem I've ever had was a lightning strike about 3 years ago. The intense surge 'fried' the motor of the freezer in the fridge. The fridge was still under warranty, so I called the service number. The same day (about 2 hours later) a serviceman came and repaired the freezer at no cost to me. That insured brand loyalty from me and my next appliance purchase was a washer and dryer, also Frigidaire. I also have a Frigidaire glass-top range. The brand is one of the least expensive and, I believe, one of the most reliable.

We like the Sears or Kenmore brand because they last longer and have a great warranty. We still have my friend's washer and dryer that are over 30 years old and they are still working. The only thing that had to be replaced was the dryer belt, as they wear out after so many years.

It of course depends on the appliance. I would check Consumer Reports. This month they have an overview of washers and dryers.
