To understand and integrate into the World you live in.
If you cannot read or write, you cannot function in society.
For example. Imagine going to another country where you don't understand the language. Suddenly you cannot do the simplest things like reading labels on food or know how much to pay for things. Where would you sleep? How do you even know where the exit is or the toilets. Now apply that to where you live. That's the importance of Education. The more education you have the greater the World opens up for you. Better jobs, more pay, a better life style, the freedom to travel to exotic places and understand different people, their cultures and customs. If you follow the path of education, you can understand the world, even the universe around you and how it all fits together.
Ignorance may be bliss but it makes your World a smaller place.
