Most horror novels do not make good horror script movies. Others do. A good horror novel or play is weird after its own fashion. The forms of communication and effect on viewer and reader are fundamentally different. I find the texts below very scary indeed!
MY TOP TEN HORROR FICTION
(Not recommended for Seniors over 85. Keep away from patients with heart-condition)
**
10. IF you enjoyed the movie, now get the novel, The Exorcist - Willie Peter Blatty.
9. If you found the movie a bit too soft and exaggerated, get the actual novel now - The Shining -- Stephen King
8. If Hannibal Lector of The silence of the Lambs movie and other SCREEN serial killers, Jason, Michael Myers, etc appeared fantastic Hollywood bad guys but not real, then get - Red Dragon - Thomas Harris
7. Perhaps, Ghost, the movie, was just comical, after all, Whoopie could even challenge the ghost to apologise! Ok, now read Sub Rosa - Robert Aikman
Try also: The turn of the Screw by Henry James
6. Meddling in totalitarian politics of repression, can create scary disturbing paranoia. Read - The Trial - Franz Kafka...../ and
-Recall the Blair Project, circumstance could scare but no real stuff happening, here stuff happens (guilt, witches, madness) - The Tragedy of Macbeth - William Shakespeare
5. Ok you watched the vampire series but they never left any lasting impression. Now get the actual novel, Dracula - Bram Stoker.
4. The movie was very good about dual personality but still enjoy the printed word - The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
- Robert Loius Stevenson
3. What about those condemned to walk the night like Hamlet's father! Scary wizards out there! Get - The Wandering Jew - Eugène Sue and....
-The Forest of a Thousand Demons - Chief Fagunwa/ Wole Soyinka
2. THEN, Edgar is a Grand Master in this genre and never lets one down, read all tales -Tales of Mystery and Imagination - Edgar Allen Poe..../ and
But if Gothic horror scares you, then rewind to 1817 - Northanger Abbey - Jane Austen
1. My Top Pick
John Webster - "The White Devil"
Recall the "Seven Gates"? movie. Here's the brief comment:1612 Supernatural badness (there are only two "good" characters in the story) with poisoning, murder, ghosts, vampires, witchcraft, Satanism, etc.
-The White Devil has all in one. Did you say you want a weird, horror novel that once you pick you "cant put it back down!"
What a joke, after a couple pages, you'll want to get it out of your bookshelf. I confess I once advised a friend to literally throw it away. . . ( a seemingly simple book can cause a lot of anxiety)
Dont worry about Webster keeping you up all night. The White Devil will send you to watch TV instead in the living room!!

You must read Mo Hayder. She is a British author who has written 4 excellent books, the best 2 by far being "Birdman" and "The Treatment." Just be cautioned that the books are EXTREMELY graphic. The 2 I've mentioned here follow a rather complicated British police detective whose brother disappeared when he was child. The first book deals with a serial rapist, and there is a lovely twist about halfway through that will throw you for a loop. The second deals with a child-snatcher, and peripherally with the detective's brother, and also has a surprising, sadly realistic ending. Both of them will absolutely keep you up all night.
Happy reading!

This isn't so much horror and it is gothic, but Storm Constantine is the best author. Try the following books:
Stalking Tender Prey
Scenting Hallowed Blood
Stealing Sacred Fire
How about Fevre Dream by George R. R. Martin?

I don't know if he's considered horror or not, but Dean Koontz definitely has written some amazing books. I loved the whole Odd Thomas series and From the Corner of his Eye. :)
