I live in San Diego, so we're not talking about many months of cold here, but if I'm going to get rid of carpet, some subtle warming might be nice, as well as out on the patio to keep plants safe (got down to 27 last night!!) and maybe once in awhile when guests are over. Less than 1000 square feet that I'd like to warm. Anybody have any ideas??

the easiest would be electric radiant heat. Check with Electrical supply houses.

You, I am sure, wont want to get into the big hassle and expense of laying an undertile heating system. We ripped out all our indoors fitted carpeting last year and laid Italian Flagstone tile throughout. We carried the tile theme out the front door on to the porch. It looks beautiful. But my goodness, why would you care about warm tiles outside when the weather is cold? I mean, you surely aren't going to be sitting out there lol.
They make marvellous outdoor carpeting these days. I know you have gone to the trouble to get rid of carpet, but you can always have a large piece that you can lay down there where you walk, during those cold months, and then roll it up when the weather improves, to display your new beautiful tile. That's what we do, and it works well.
