I would seek medical help if I was unable to cope with something tragic. Maybe a pschyciatrist.

Surround yourself with people that are new. Either make new friends that you don't know, or ask some friends you do know to introduce you to their friends. This will help you forget whatever it is you're trying to escape, also try meditating. Look at pictures in a slide show of something you like and watch it regularly, or even daily. Look at yourself in the mirror quite frequently, and put on some funny outfits, or just try making a new look for yourself.
Try watching movies that you normally find unappealing, or start doing things you normally never would think of doing. Like for example if you don't like going to see opera, go watch opera. Just do everything differently than what you're used to doing. Even if it's really boring, just remember diversity, you can devolop a likeness to different cultures as well and just try doing things you've never done before. This will help you forget whatever you're trying to forget and move on with your life.
I leave seeking help as a last option and at your own disgression.

I feel that by trying to forget it you are taking the wrong approach. Talk about the experience with someone you trust and use it as a learning experience. Turning negatives into positives is the best way to overcome. If you have not learned from it and worked through it youwill never get over it.

I know what you're talking about. I think about something that happened in my life that was awful, even when I don't want to think about it I just do for some reason. It sux...
I try to meditate a lot and read stories..even confronting my demons to try and make it not so uncomfortable anymore. I'm a lot better than before though. I think it will gradually fade away...

I think that this thing is controlling you, and you'd like to control it. This may help:
When you understand something, you have power over it. Look to understand it- not to be at peace with it.
With understanding comes the power to make a choice. You free your mind by taking what you learned from your understanding, and applying it to your life. You have your power back.

Honestly? Therapy. Even when I was just a little over-stressed in college I met with one of the counselors from the Psychology department just to get everything weighing on me off my chest. It was wonderful to talk to someone who I didn't have as a professor, and who didn't judge me. I recommend you do the same.
