What does the "anal drive" signify in Freudian psychoanalysis?

I just can't make the connecton between infantile anal behavior and adult behavior. Anality seems to be a big thing in understanding art. I just can't make the connection.

my psychology lectures have explained by the childs fascination with excretion. i remember him saying that at that point in life this thing is a big issue for the child.
i never understood it either
