It doesn't surprise me at all. What does surprise me though is that people seem to think this is new information. With people waiting to get married, do they really expect them to abstain from sex until they're 28, 29, even 30? I'm all for TEENS waiting to have sex until they're emotionally ready, but to think that adults will wait until they're married is ludacris. We live in an "instant gratification" society these days and with women being more independent and not "needing" to get married to have a successful life, the idea of premarital sex being taboo will eventually go the way of things like women being unable to wear pants or working outside the home.

You raise some good points. I can empathize with people who get upset over abortion, but their attacks on contraception are asenine and backward. The surest way to prevent abortions is to prevent unwanted pregancies -- hence we should teach and distribute birth control at every opportunity. We should FLOOD the school system with a full understanding of how sexuality works because IGNORANCE is what gets people pregnant. "C'mon baby, if I pull out quick enough you can't get pregnant." Get the point? And, of course, puritanical America is full of liars. We have just as much premarital sex as anyone, but at least the Europeans are open about it while we try to pretend our kids won't do what we did. And what's REALLY ironic is that the holier-than-thou South is the WORST offender for teen pregancies, divorces and STD's. What a surprise ... not.

The numbers are undoubtedly high, but that high?

I think this was a study that was biased towards finding such a high % to support an agenda they are pursuing, i.e. discredit the abstinence movement.
