I have to say drowning, too. I got caught in a rip tide once and couldn't tell which way was up. The few seconds till I found air seemed like an eternity. My mind was so panicked yet I was too aware that I might be about to die. I didn't, but I can imagine how long those few minutes would be and the burning in your chest.

back in the old days, convicts were put into a oven like stove, which was made to look like a bull, and broiled alive from the fire they light up under it. First you suffer, then you die from mass pain.
