I have to say drowning, too. I got caught in a rip tide once and couldn't tell which way was up. The few seconds till I found air seemed like an eternity. My mind was so panicked yet I was too aware that I might be about to die. I didn't, but I can imagine how long those few minutes would be and the burning in your chest.

back in the old days, convicts were put into a oven like stove, which was made to look like a bull, and broiled alive from the fire they light up under it. First you suffer, then you die from mass pain.

What does it matter? When you are dead all memories and sensations are gone. If it's the most painful thing you can think of, it's over and done with.
