this is the sisst (boil) just below the tail bone. the actual boil is gone right now but the problem is still there down in. i am having it cut out in a couple weeks. i am just looking for other peoples experiences

doc told to figure on a week out of work. this is the second year it swelled up on me, first time was miner and didn't go to the doctors thought it was nothing, this time it was real bad, so rather than waiting till it gets worse i want it gone. also this should reduce the cutting he has to do. he is hoping to seal it up to rather than having to pack it a couple times a day.

how bad was yours, how long out of work, pain level, .............?????????

I WORK FOR A SURGEON and we do pilonidal cyst surgery on a weekly basis at our practice. It is very common. We excise the ENTIRE cyst cavity and leave the wound "open" and pack it with iodoform gauze packing strip (gauze soaked in betadine basically). We want the wound to "granulate" in. Meaning, to grow new tissue from the inside...out. This way no new tracts form. It is not good to excise the cyst & then suture the skin edges closed, it only creates a pocket for it to re-accumulate. It is a lengthy recovery time; cuz you have to have numerous packing changes several times a week. But you end up with a much nicer result.
