I have windows xp and downloaded a game that was DOS formatted. How do I make this work on my computer?

Easiest way is with the dosemulator DosBox http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1.

Dos box has a commandline interface, so you might want a GUI for that like D-Fend:

You can try setting compatibility mode, but that doesn't work all the time. I use DosBox, it's a DOS emulator that runs in Windows...it works wonders!
