As someone else said, there are 14 original Oz books by L. Frank Baum. The first, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" was written in 1900. There is also a collection titled "Little Wizard Stories" by Baum. When Baum died, Ruth Plumly Thompson took over and wrote 19 more. Then Oz illustrator (all but the first of the original 14) John R. Neill wrote 3. Jack Snow, Rachel Cosgrove and Eloise Jarvis McGraw continuted the series to a grand total of 40 and ending in 1963.
However, L. Frank Baum's grandson, Roger Baum, is now continuing the series.

There are 40 "official" books of Oz stories.
L. Frank Baum created the series and wrote 14. Ruth Plumly Thompson wrote 19 more. John R. Neill wrote 3, Jack Snow wrote 2, Rachel Cosgrove wrote one, and Eloise Jarvis McGraw and Lauren Lynn McGraw wrote one.
There are more Oz books, but they are not considered OZ "canon."
